Paying for 3D Prints#

Starting September 8, a new payment system is coming online for 3D printing at the SHED makerspace. When you submit a print, you will now be charged Tiger Bucks automatically! Here are some FAQs:

Note

Before using the new 3DPrinterOS system, you must log into make.rit.edu at least once to automatically apply the update. Until you do this, you will get errors when you attempt to print!

How do I know the price of my print?#

Self-Serve: The price is visible in your "Files" page, next to the print name, and appears at the top of the print submission dialog when you choose a printer.

Full-Serve: Your print will have a $0.01 placeholder cost until staff quote your print. You will receive an email with the updated price, asking you to accept or reject it.

When do I get charged?#

Self-Serve: Prints are charged as soon as they are submitted to the queue.

Full-Serve: Prints are charged once you accept the emailed price.

What if I don't have enough Tiger Bucks?#

Self-Serve: You will be unable to queue the print, and get an error message.

Full-Serve: Staff will notify you that you have insufficient balance, and ask you to add more Tiger Bucks. Email them back once complete.

Tiger Bucks can be added at https://tigerspend.rit.edu/, or at Tiger Bucks deposit machines located at RIT Dining Locations.

Once you load Tiger Bucks, it can take up to 10 minutes for them to appear in 3DPrinterOS!

What if I am printing for a club, class, or research?#

Class prints can be submitted in a way that your department is charged, not you. Your professor will have more details on this process.

Club and Research prints can be submitted via a club/research account, so that the club/lab is charged directly. Contact make@rit.edu to set up an account for your group!

What if my print fails, or I cancel it?#

If you cancel a print before it starts, you will receive a full refund automatically.

If you cancel a print mid-print, you will receive a partial refund based on the material not used. Not all prints can be canceled mid-print, though.

If your print fails due to a machine issue, you will receive a refund automatically.

If your print fails but was still marked as complete, come in and talk to staff about getting it re-printed for free.

I was charged the wrong amount or didn't get a refund!#

Please contact make@rit.edu, with information about your charge, so we can review it.

What about my prints from last year? How do I pay for those?#

Do not worry about prints from last year, this process will take effect going forwards.

What are Construct Credits?#

Construct Credits are an internal currency that can be used to pay for 3D prints. They are issued for a number of reasons. You will be informed if you are given Construct Credits.

Your total balance displayed in 3DPrinterOS is the total amount of Construct Credits and Tiger Bucks you have. There is no way to automatically check your Construct Credits balance, but you will receive your balance info on any receipts you get, and you can stop in and talk to staff to do a manual balance check.

Construct Credits are used before Tiger Bucks when paying for a transaction.

Payments in Construct Credits are refunded to Construct Credits. In the event of a transaction that was partially paid with Construct Credits and partially with Tiger Bucks, refunds will be returned to both sources, with a bias towards Tiger Bucks. See the Refunds Section of the Makerspace Policies for more information.
