Turning Tools#

The SHED has 5 standardized tools that will work for a majority of applications. They use a high speed steel insert that can be easily changed when dull, either by rotating or replacing entirely. Reference video
- SSR: Rougher, for creating basic shapes
- SSTH: Turning & Hollower, refining your shapes
- SS55: Detailer, detailing your shapes
- SS90: 90 Degree, for sharp internal corners
- SSSCF: Shear Cutting Finisher, for surface finishing
Changing Workholding#

The SHED has a handful of different workholding options for turning: a 4 jaw chuck for holding tenons and bowls, a pen mandrel for doing pens, a face plate for screwing your workpiece to it, and a center driver. To change the workholding, following the instructions below:

- Screw the stop pin into the spindle to stop it from moving
- For the lathe chuck, screw plate, or face plate, insert removal pin into the side hole and turn (pull towards you to loosen)
- For the center driver and pen mandrel, insert the long removal pin through the head stock and lightly tap to break the taper lock
- Swap to your desired workholding and secure
Changing Speeds#

The Wood Lathe has 3 different speed ranges that can be controlled via a knob on the control panel. The speed ranges are: 50-525, 325-1750, 650-3500 RPM.
- Move out the aluminum handle
- Move the upper and lower belt to the same position above and below
- Spin the spindle by hand to make sure it is properly seated
- Tighten the belt by pushing the aluminum handle back in
Making Chips#

- Once your material is secured, spin up the spindle from low to where you want it to be and watch for excessive vibration or wobbling.
- Turn the spindle off and adjust the tool rest so that your tool can be comfortable held at a low angle. Reference video.
- Grab the tool that you are going to use, turn on the spindle and slowly push the tool into the material. Square shapes will be a procession knock as it takes down each corner.
- You can roll the tool left to right to remove material.
In-Person Competency Check#
- Change to the center driver
- Adjust the speed from one step to another
- Secure your material
- Adjust tool rest
- Make chips
